Sharminub Covid relief – Most recent update | Sharminub Knowledge Rising

Dear Friends,

On behalf of our dear sangha at Sharminub, Kathmandu, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for donating to Sharminub Covid Relief. Through the joint fundraising drive organized by Sharminub Knowledge Rising (France), Infinite Compassion (Germany & Switzerland) & The Shamarpa Foundation (United States), we were able to raise approximately 50,000 Euros so far.

Below is the most recent update:
Approximately 20,000 Euros has been transferred to Sharminub already and we will coordinate with Sharminub to transfer the rest of the funds in the coming weeks. The Sharminub monks have so far utilized your donations in the following two ways:

  1. Created an emergency fund for medical treatment and supplies costs:
Covid related expenses in Nepal are extremely high. An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed for a Covid patient costs approximately 400 Euros a night in Kathmandu, and often times Covid patients end up staying at the hospital for weeks. Because of crowded living quarters at Sharminub (just as in any monastery), it will be extremely difficult to contain the spread of Covid-19 if anyone contracts it.  Therefore, prevention of Covid-19 within Sharminub property has been prioritized and part of your donations have been set aside to create a financial safety net for Sharminub monks for medical emergencies.
  1. To provide support to other disadvantaged communities:
Sharminub has already donated essential sanitation and hygiene items such as PPEs (masks, goggles, protective suits), hand sanitizers, oximeters, sanitizer pumps and bleach.
There have been two beneficiary groups so far, and there will be more: the local Raniban community (area where Sharminub is located) and the remote village of Yolmo, whose representatives came all the way from Yolmo to receive the much-needed essential items. Sharminub also donated one oxygen concentrator (Euro 1000 each) to the Yolmo community.

Additionally, Sharminub is looking to partner with a local group to help distribute food to disadvantaged people in Raniban, especially the ones who have lost their jobs and have no money to feed themselves. Sharminub cannot take the risk of sending their monks to distribute food because of the high risks involved in bringing the virus back to the monastic community which is why they are looking for a trustworthy local group who can do this work safely and effectively. We will keep you updated on any development related to these efforts.
